This weekend is about the biggest fishing weekend in Alaska – the salmon are on their way up the river in the tens of thousands. This is dipnetting weekend. Basically you dip a huge net into the river and try and catch salmon – pretty easy when there are a ton of salmon. On the beach hundreds of fisherpeople stand shoulder to shoulder – they call it combat fishing. On the river boats drive up and float down in endless circles. Every year we manage to stock up our freezer. Since there’s only one road south, everyone’s headed in a long line of vehicles, hoping for no roadworks – ha!!, no accidents and lots of fish.
